About the Expert
Dr Jon Willows has over thirty years of experience working in mental health services; across primary, secondary and tertiary services.
Dr Willows studied Psychology at University College London (UCL) and was lucky enough to be taught by Professor Peter Fonagy; amongst others. He went on to work in psychiatric services (including secure services) whilst studying for an MSc in Research Methods in Psychology. He then took up a role as an Assistant Psychologist with a combined clinical and research role.
Dr Willows used a method from the world of Sociology – Conversation Analysis (CA) – to begin to explore the ‘ingredients’ of successful therapy. He then went on to the Doctoral training programme in Clinical Psychology at the Faculty of Medicine at Newcastle University. Whilst there, Dr Willows had the privilege, whilst in his third-year placement in the regional personality disorder treatment unit, of being supervised by a Clinical Psychologist who had also trained as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.
He decided to take his research interests forwards and used Discourse Analysis (DA) to explore the process of successful psychological therapy for Schizophrenia; from beginning to end.
Having qualified as a Clinical Psychologist, he worked in Crawley and then moved on to a role in Brighton.
Following in the footsteps of his previous supervisor, he then ‘double trained’ as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist – whilst in a full-time NHS position. Having completed this, he continued to take up a series of roles in the NHS and became a Consultant in 2008 with lead responsibility for the delivery of psychological therapies across Brighton and Hove and a Trust-wide role within the multidisciplinary Integrated Governance Team (IGT).
More recently, Dr Willows has worked, full-time, in private practice providing assessments, medico-legal services, treatment, teaching, consultancy services, training and clinical supervision.
He has also held a role at Brighton University on the post-graduate course in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Dr Willows has also undertaken further training in EMDR, IPT, Mentalization, and Clinical Hypnosis.
He is a published author in the field of psychological therapy following childhood abuse and has contributed to a host of papers and articles with colleagues regarding medicolegal work.
“My experience in the world of ‘psychology’ has, as above, been very broad and deep and I look back, with gratitude, to those who have inspired me along the way.”
